This necklace features a stamped brass teardrop with a fringe of blue, green, and black Mozambique Island trade beads. The trade beads used in this piece were made some 200-400 years ago in Venice, Italy and then taken to Africa on ships by Portuguese merchants. Over the years there were many shipwrecks off the shallow coast, and the beads and other relics spilled into the sea. Nowadays they wash ashore on remote Mozambique Island, worn and weathered by the centuries of salt and sand.
